John asked:

In other words, after overhead expenses, how much profit does the average LASIK surgeon take home from each procedure? I realize this figure will vary greatly depending on circumstances, but I am looking for a general idea - perhaps a range. Thanks for your help.

I had lasik surgery done in May of 2007. I opted for a 5 year, low-monthly payment plan. This doesn’t exceed the 7.5% needed to deduct for medical expenses… is there anyway to deduct this?

What if Lasik Surgery fails? What then?

Hi everyone,

Studies tell me that between 90 and 95% of Lasik procedures are effective. I thinking of the worse case scenario.

If the surgery is unsuccessful and vision loss or other sight problems (halos, poor night vision, etc) occurs, what happens then? Can a second surgery be performed and if so at whose expense? Or do you spend the rest of your life dealing with a bigger sight problem and kicking yourself for undergoing the procedure?

I’m thinking about the procedure and weighting the risks and benefits.

Thanks,
Scott

I’m being told by family that I need to wait before I either get new glasses or LASIK. Should I listen to them

When I am driving, especially at night, it is hard to see. My current glasses were in my purse that was stolen. The glasses I am now using are about 7 years old (I’m 50 years old). While we are trying to get a handle on the income and expenses for our business, we have someone helping us and she says I need to wait 6 months before I do anything. There is no guarantee that in 6 months I would have the go ahead. The LASIK would be about $250 to $300 per month, interest free, for 12 months.

I almost ran a red light a couple of nights ago since I couldn’t see well. This is a NEED, not a want. I don’t want everyone angry with me but waiting is not an option.

I am not a child and I know what I need. They just don’t understand the need or they just discount it. What is your opinion about defying everyone and getting the LASIK while my husband is out of town for 10 days?

Medical Tax Deduction Questions?

Emma S asked:

Hi. I am hoping to deduct my medical expenses from my taxes. I just have a few questions. Can I deduct medical expenses from seeing a psychotherapist who is licensed but not necessarily a psychiatrist or psychologist? I paid (pay) 90-100 a session and went to numerous sessions. Also is the price I paid for my actual insurance each month included in the medical expenses. Does it make it a difference if my employer deducted my medical insurance costs vs. me paying them directly for tax purposes? And finally I had lasik done, can I deduct the entire amount?

Monthly gains. Am I making progress?

Vin asked:

Ok I am making monthly gains from 800-1500 a month in my bank account after expenses. I have a house down payment already. My other goals are Lasik eye correction, HD TV, Kayak, Trip to New Zealand, other medical operation.

Didn’t know if I could get any life pointers. What type of account I should put my down payment in while I’m waiting. I also have a min balance I keep in my checking account in case **** hits the fan. My current rent is low. 575 for everything.

Oh I’m also currently single but am seeing someone right now. ( have no idea where it is going)

Can my dependent file l040 long form ?

Stephen N asked:

My wife and I claim my son on your taxes, he is a college student age 20. He is having Lasik eye surgury this summer Cost=$3000. He will only gross $4000 thus summer.
The $3000 medical expnses will only be deductable on HIS return. Medical expenses of $3000 are NOT deductable on my joint return.
Can my son file an individual 1040 and capture his medical expenses and still allow me to claim him on my return as a dependent??
Ok His gross is less than the dependent filing limit $5350.
He does not have to file but..
Won’t he want to file to recover the State and Federal withholding his employer has been deducting??
Thanks for all the relies!!
